Bamboo sticks are very commonly used in Agarbatti or Incense sticks in India. India has a huge market for the bamboo stick making industry with new players trying to enter into the industry each day. The sector has become a easy industry to get into with the introduction of coating machines automatic or semi-automatic or pedal type machines for rural households or NGOs so that labour oriented industry can become production oriented.
Because of this there is a huge surge of requirement of Bamboo round sticks in India. Basically round sticks come from China and Vietnam but as the dollar rates and in-house consumption have gone up the requirement of making these sticks in India have increased.
I would like to highlight the issues and things to understand before we actually get into this industry.
1. Bamboo should be mature
2. Bamboo should be straight and can be made into strips easily
3. Bamboo which is softer can be used, bamboo harder to split or having heavy knots would not give good quality sticks
4. Chinese and vietnam being water rich and also have bamboo species which are soft so that sticks have lesser grains
5. Lesser cost of bamboo
6. High Power requirement
Things that we need to understand to make it profitable:
1. Bamboo should cost less than 5-7 INR per kg to be profitable
2. Bamboo of better quality would mean lesser wastage
3. Bamboo wastage selling or usage is important
4. Any plant with 1-3 round stick making machines is unviable as labour, productivity and related factors make the cost of stick too high
5. Initally try one set of machine and check operators, power and other factors
